Travel Alert

From Monday 21 to Friday 25 July, there will be no service on the Metropolitan or Piccadilly tube lines between Ruislip and Uxbridge whilst the track is repaired. This will obviously affect those hoping to travel to Brunel by tube. A replacement bus service will operate but the journey time is expected to take at least an extra 20 minutes.

eLearning 2.0 is a lively international conference exploring Technology-Enhanced Learning and social media technologies including Blogs, Twitter, Facebook, Wikis, MOOCs and YouTube. The main themes of this year’s conference are MOOCs and “flipping the classroom”. Flipping the classroom involves delivering digital material outside the classroom and then using class sessions to make sense of the material. Brunel Business School (Eastern Gateway Building), Brunel University, West London, UK. Brunel University is in Uxbridge on the western edge of London. Uxbridge is in a prime location for reaching the transport network that embraces London and South-east England. Keynote Speaker - John Carter McKnight

Our second #elearning2 Keynote Speaker this year is John Carter McKnight.

John Carter McKnight is a postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Sociology at Lancaster University in the U.K. His research focuses on emergent community governance, ethics and social norm enforcement in technologically-mediated spaces from internet gaming communities to spacecraft. 

He has developed and taught a range of graduate and undergraduate courses in games and culture, and the governance of emerging technologies.

Peter Bryant is the Head of Learning Technology and Innovation at the London School of Economics and Political Science.  He was previously a Principal Lecturer in Educational Technology at the University of Greenwich where he led the innovative Greenwich Connect project, which was designed to transform learning and teaching with technology at institutional level. His interests lie in the area of developing and implementing digital pedagogies, using and integrating students as producers and creators through social media and supporting innovation in higher education teaching.  He also publishes in the area of community and network development in the arts.

Getting to the conference

elearning 2.0 2013 is being held in Brunel Business School, Brunel University on the 3^rd  Floor, Eastern Gateway Building, room 324 and the adjacent open area. 

For delegates who require a car parking space, please enter the campus at the Kingston Lane entrance and at the roundabout take a right and drive over the zebra crossing and drive around the island to park in a temporary bay by the Eastern Gateway Building.

Visit the Reception Desk and let the Reception staff know that you require a visitors car park permit for the eLearning conference. 

There are car parking options in bays with red dots in either the St John’s or Sports Centre car parks located in Zone E which is a brief walk from Eastern Gateway Building.

The Eastern Gateway building is also located in Zone E on the campus map.

Keynote Speaker - Prof Steve Warburton

Our #elearning2 Keynote Speaker this year is Professor Steven Warburton.

Steve is the Head of Department of Technology Enhanced Learning at the University of Surrey and an Associate Research Fellow at King’s Learning Institute, King’s College London. He is also a Fellow at the Centre for Distance Education at the University of London International Programmes where he leads work within the research strategy group and chairs the annual Research and Innovation in Distance and Elearning Conference. He has worked on a range of national and European projects that have included: the development a methodology for abstracting design patterns through shared expert practice; explorations of teaching practice in virtual worlds; developing pattern languages in the domains of digital identity and social media tools. More recently he has been working on digital competences and digital fluency, mobile learning, digital publishing models, open educational resources and educational analytics.

We are delighted to announce that Jennifer Killham has been appointed Programme Chair for elearning2.0 2013. Jennifer is a doctoral student at the University of Cincinnati. Jennifer is no stranger to #eLearning2.0 having given a very interesting presentation herself entitled "Beyond Clogs and Cheese: building cultural competency one couch at a time" in 2011. Jennifer will be helping with promoting the conference internationally.

How do I locate the conference?

In 2012s eLearning 2.0 was held in Brunel Business School's MBA Suite on the first floor of the Russell Building, the second building on the left from the entrance. This is the same venue as last year. We originally hoped to use the School's new building which you can see at the entrance, but they are sill putting the final touches to the furnishings. You can see the location of the Russell building on the Campus Map from the Downloads link.

Giving a presentation?

Please bring a copy of your presentation on a USB key for copying on to our Presentation PC at Registration or at the latest at the break preceding your presentation. This will help minimize any delay and unnecessary stress at the start of your presentation!

Need special software?

All conference presenters will need to use the provided Windows PC for their presentations as we are using special screen-recording software. If you have any special software requirements other than the Web, please contact our systems manager gary.wright@brunel.ac.uk urgently to discuss your eLearning 2.0 requirements.

Steve Wheeler is Associate Professor of Learning Technologies at Plymouth University, UK.

He specialises in research on e-learning and distance education, with particular emphasis on social media and Web 2.0 tools.  Steve is the author of more than 150 scholarly articles and is an active and prolific edublogger. His blog Learning with ‘e’s is a regular online commentary on the social and cultural impact of disruptive technologies, and the application of digital media in education and training.

Steve is chair of the Plymouth e-Learning Conference. He serves on the editorial boards of a number of learning technology and education related journals including Research in Learning Technology (formerly ALT-J), the International Review of Research in Open and Distance Learning and Digital Culture and Education.

Keynote Speaker - Maggie McPherson

Maggie is a Senior Lecturer for ICT in Education within the School of Education at the University of Leeds and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is currently co-editor for the Interactive Technology and Smart Education (ITSE) Emerald Journal and co-chair of the IADIS eLearning Conferences. Over the last two decades, Maggie been involved in various EU and UK funded technology-enhanced learning research projects and has published extensively in this field. She is a research funding evaluator for the EU-FP7 SME-ICT programme. She was also a funding evaluator for the ESRC, EPSRC, Academy of Finland, and for the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI).

How or when does technology enhance learning?

The term 'technology-enhanced learning' suggests that technologies can be used to improve learner engagement and their experience of learning. Heightened experience and engagement are often associated with a greater degree of personalisation. But is technology inherently more alien and impersonal? How or when does technology work particularly well in making us feel included, less isolated, and personally and socially involved?

Twitter or Facebook?

The use of Twitter is becoming widespread in modern business. Despite its 140 character limit, it has several advantages over Facebook for communication. But the vast majority of HE students are familiar with Facebook, not Twitter. Is it worth the effort to move them to Twitter for teaching? Comments please!

An oft cited reason for not using Facebook for teaching is that students don't want their teachers seeing what they are up to. Do you agree? Is there a future for Facebook in teaching?
